Engagement letter generator

Fill in the parts that change from client to client and we will assemble the letter. Written for United States, and yours to edit afterwards.

No signup and no email. Nothing you type here is stored — the letter is built, handed to you, and the request ends. Client names never reach our database because there is no row to put them in.

Your firm
Your client

Name the entity, not the person you talk to.

The engagement

Finish the sentence “We will…”. Name the period or the filing.

The clause that prevents most arguments. Worth the thirty seconds.

What the generator writes

One complete engagement letter, addressed from your firm to the client entity, dated today and set out under these headings. Any field you leave blank stays in the letter as a visible [placeholder], so an unfinished letter looks unfinished rather than quietly missing a clause.

  1. 1. Purpose of this letter
  2. 2. Scope of the engagement
  3. 3. What is not included
  4. 4. Your responsibilities
  5. 5. Our responsibilities
  6. 6. Fees
  7. 7. Ending the engagement
  8. 8. Confidentiality and your information
  9. 9. Agreement

The letter opens in your browser. Print it, or save it as a PDF from the print dialog. For a letter to keep editing, start from a template instead: each one downloads as a Word document.

Which engagements it covers

You can choose any of the six types below. Whichever you choose, the generator writes the core clauses every engagement letter needs: scope, exclusions, responsibilities, fees, ending the engagement and confidentiality. The clauses one kind of work needs on top of those are in its template, which you can download in Word and PDF:

Written for each country

The generator writes the letter for the edition of the site you use it from. The structure is the same in all four; the standard the work is done to, the privacy law, the tax authority named in the exclusions and the fee currency change with the country.

Edition Work done in accordance with Privacy law Fees in
United States The AICPA's engagement letter guidance Applicable state privacy law US dollars
Canada The CPA Canada Handbook PIPEDA or its provincial equivalent Canadian dollars
United Kingdom The ICAEW's engagement letter helpsheets The UK GDPR Pounds sterling
Australia APES 305 Terms of Engagement The Privacy Act 1988 Australian dollars

Generator or template?

Use the generator when you want a finished letter for one client in a minute: it fills in the names, the scope, the fee and the dates for you. Start from a template when the engagement needs more than the core clauses, or when you want a Word file to keep as your firm's standard letter. The engagement letter template is the general one, with a worked sample.
